The Prison Journal

01-16-2013 The Prison Journal: An International Forum on Incarceration and Alternative Sanctions was first published in 1921 by the Pennsylvania Prison Society, a social justice and prison reform organization founded in 1787. It remains the official publication of the Society, and is now published by Sage. The journal's mission is to be a "central forum for studies, ideas, and discussions of adult and juvenile confinement, treatment interventions, and alternative sanctions." It is published quarterly, and each issue contains three to seven articles. Examples of recent papers include an essay condemning the practice of sentencing juveniles to life in prison without the possibility of parole; and evaluation of the use of radio frequency devices in prisons to prevent and investigate sexual assaults; and an empirical evaluation of a psychometric instrument that measures group climate in prisons. There are topical special issues;b1the most recent topic was children of incarcerated parents. The contributors are academics and practitioners from the United States and other countries, specializing in the fields of public administration and ethics, criminal justice studies, psychiatric nursing, and related disciplines. The articles are scholarly and written in clear language, making this journal a good choice for social science undergraduates. It is also appropriate for faculty and professionals interested in social justice issues as they apply to prisons. URL: http://intl-tpj.sagepub.com (Metcalf, Susan)
