Theoretical Criminology

Publisher:  Sage Publications Ltd.
01-16-2013 Theoretical Criminology, as the title suggests, looks at the theoretical aspects of criminology. Within that constraint, however, the coverage is interdisciplinary, international, and broad. For example, in a recent issue, a London-based professor of criminology and a colleague in social research looked at "the emergence of the security state as a successor to the liberal welfare state"; and a cultural criminologist looked at the culture of justice through the analysis of stand-up comedy and folk humor. Most issues contain three to six articles and a number of book reviews, usually seven or eight. There are special thematic issues; the latest was titled "Reinventing Penal Parsimony" and looked at what the editor termed an "era of penal excess." This journal is highly regarded by criminal justice scholars (see section introduction for information on selection/ranking criteria). It is recommended for academic libraries and practitioners interested in the subject. It is available in print and online, back to issue 1 in 1997 from Sage.
