The International Journal of Robotics Research

Publisher:  Sage Publications Ltd.
01-16-2013 Billing itself as the first scholarly publication in robotics, it is among the most-cited journals in the field. The articles are relatively lengthy (averaging 20 pages each), and the treatment is highly mathematical. The earlier "Communications" (short) articles appear to have been dropped altogether, and special issues are usually papers from a conference. Although there is some attention paid to larger systems, most papers consider specific aspects of robot function, such as light-sensing, flexing of manipulators, force sensing, or motion variables. Experimentation is almost always on laboratory-scale equipment, although the intent is application to actual production environments. Multimedia appendixes (datasets, code, models, and simulations) are available as links, as are the reference lists. The publisher's site has a nice interface, with all of the modern conveniences: links to references, alerts for cites or corrections to an article, RSS feeds, social bookmarking, and marking and downloading to a number of citation managers. This is an excellent title with good value for the money for any institution engaged in robotics research. (Siegler, Sharon L)
