Police Quarterly

01-16-2013 Police Quarterly is published by Sage in association with the Police Executive Research Forum and the Police Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The former is a national membership organization of metropolitan, county, and state police executives. It was formed in 1977 to improve the profession through research and public policy debate. The latter is a section of a prominent international association of scholars and professionals, and is the publisher of two other journals reviewed in this section, Justice Quarterly and the Journal of Criminal Justice Education. The journal reviewed here, Police Quarterly, publishes research that is policy-oriented to inform both those in academia and practitioners. The articles are in the form of "theoretical contributions, empirical studies, essays, comparative analyses, critiques, innovative program descriptions, debates, and book reviews." An editorial introduction to a recent journal stressed the importance of articles to "test one or more empirical research questions" and have a clear relevance to policy. Thus the journal appears to be now favoring original research over essays and other non-empirical contributions. However, most articles appearing in the last few issues are already empirically based, so readers shouldn't see a major editorial shift. Examples of topics addressed recently include the limits to regional data sharing; the shared perceptions of gay and lesbian police officers; and the reasons behind policewomen's assertive or passive reactions to sexual harassment. Although this journal is perhaps too specialized for some academic libraries, it should be included in the collections of those that serve criminal justice students and faculty. It also should be considered by large public libraries and special libraries. URL: http://intl-pqx.sagepub.com (Metcalf, Susan)
