01-16-2013 One of the top-tier African American Studies academic journals, the Journal of Black Studies began in 1970 during the height of the Black Studies movement. Its current editor, Dr. Molefi Asante, founded the journal, then subsequently headed the nation's first doctoral program in Africana Studies. Published eight times per year, the journal explores all aspects of the black experience, focusing not only on African Americans, but also on Africa, the Caribbean region, and the African diaspora throughout the world. Issues include five to ten articles, review essays, and an occasional book review. The scholarship inside JBS covers a wide range of subject areas, including: contemporary political and social issues, history, economics, literature, art, and more. While the editor is closely affiliated with Afrocentricity, a concept that is well-represented in the journal, articles reflect a variety of philosophical perspectives and research methodologies.
