Index on Censorship

Publisher:  Sage Publications Ltd.
01-16-2013 In the last few years, we have seen an increase in protests, and with this, an increase in restrictions on speech and behavior. Index on Censorship, first conceived of in response to Soviet sham trials, reports on incidences of censorship from around the world, exploring controversial issues and bringing abuses to light. It seeks "to shed light on other challenges facing free expression, including religious extremism, the rise of nationalism, and Internet censorship." Recent topics include a manifesto by jailed dissident Aung San Suu Kyi; the Russian culture of secrecy; and the under-reporting of violence and murder in Mexico City. It offers creative works (poetry, fiction, plays), reports, editorials, and essays. Although it does explore these issues from an academic perspective, the writing is accessible and the information pertinent, making Index on Censorship suitable for a more general readership as well.
