Unlike The American Historical Review (above in this section), the Journal is exclusively devoted to America's past. The scholarly articles presuppose some knowledge of American history. In addition to numerous book and film reviews, each issue provides a list of recent dissertations and published bibliographies and a classified listing of recent articles. Recent articles include such topics as the "Terrorism, History, and Historians: A View from a Social Scientist" and "Consuming Relief: Food Stamps and the New Welfare of the New Deal."
