Notes and Queries

01-16-2013 This unique and well-respected journal, "devoted principally to English language and literature, lexicography, history, and scholarly antiquarianism," has the principal aim of asking and responding to the questions of readers. Articles tend to be brief examinations (no more than a few pages in length) that explore facts and details about language and literature. The journal's scope encompasses work produced from the Medieval period to the early twentieth century. Each issue also includes 10;b220 book reviews and sometimes a "Memorabilia" section, offering festschrift or other topical discussion. Recent articles include "The Buskin and The Sockes: Ben Jonson's Iconographical Portrait of Shakespeare," "Blake: An Unrecognized Allusion to Plato," "The 1807 Edition of the Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer," and "Flattened Primroses: Discarded Floral Symbolism in an Early Manuscript Version of D. H. Lawrence's Odour of Chrysanthemums." Most suitable for academic and large public libraries. (HCM) (Martin, Heath)
