History Workshop Journal

01-16-2013 This journal concerns itself with "the fundamental elements of social lifework and material culture, close relations and politics, sex divisions, family, school and home." True to the "workshop" aim of demystifying historical production, the editors encourage critical dialogue and debate through a variety of features. The editors also insist that contributors write in a clear, accessible style, avoid jargon, and not assume prior knowledge or specialized interest among the readership. There are generally four or five articles and essays with such titles as "The Poor Law Commission: a New Digital Resource for Nineteenth-century Domestic Historians" or "Secrets and Lies: the Radical Potential of Family History." An outstanding journal for both experts and laypersons. (Wies, Loraine )
