Combining theory with the examination of practice, Applied Linguistics "is less interested in the ad hoc solution to particular problems and more interested in the handling of problems in a principled way by reference to theoretical studies." The journal's mission statement lists a wide range of studies covered by the journal: "bilingualism and multilingualism; computer-mediated communication; conversation analysis; deaf linguistics; discourse analysis and pragmatics; corpus linguistics; critical discourse analysis; first and additional language learning, teaching, and use; forensic linguistics; language assessment; language planning and policies; languages for special purposes; literacies; multimodal communication; rhetoric and stylistics; and translations." With a view to fostering debate, the journal observes a quicker-than-usual turnaround time for short pieces that appear in its forum section.
