Applied Linguistics

01-16-2013 This journal is devoted to treatments of general issues raised by specific situations in which language is learned and used. Combining theory with the examination of practice, Applied Linguistics "is less interested in the ad hoc solution to particular problems and more interested in the handling of problems in a principled way by reference to theoretical studies." The journal's mission statement lists a wide range of studies covered by the journal: "bilingualism and multilingualism; computer-mediated communication; conversation analysis; deaf linguistics; discourse analysis and pragmatics; corpus linguistics; critical discourse analysis; first and additional language learning, teaching, and use; forensic linguistics; language assessment; language planning and policies; languages for special purposes; literacies; multimodal communication; rhetoric and stylistics; and translations." With a view to fostering debate, the journal observes a quicker-than-usual turnaround time for short pieces that appear in its forum section. A highly cited, core journal in the field, Applied Linguistics is recommended for all academic libraries. (Staiger, Jeff)
