Nanotechnology

01-16-2013 Nanotechnology is the study of phenomena in extremely small dimensions, usually on the order of the size of a hydrogen atom. In this journal, nanotechnology is taken to include the ability to individually address, control, and modify structures, materials, and devices with nanometer precision, and the synthesis of such structures into systems. It encompasses the understanding of the fundamental physics, chemistry, biology, and technology of nanometer-scale objects and how such objects can be used in the areas of computation, sensors, nanostructured materials, and nano-biotechnology. Nanotechnology is the official publication of the Institute of Physics that is dedicated to this area of research. It publishes papers that present original research in the field, as well as review articles and tutorials. Articles are grouped into seven sections: biology and medicine; electronics and photonics; patterning and nanofabrication; energy at the nanoscale; sensing and actuating; materials (synthesis or self-assembly); and materials (properties, characterization or tools). Some articles have supplemental multimedia files that are available alongside the text in the online version of the journal. A related web site, http://nanotechweb.org, provides links to news, conferences, employment opportunities, and key papers on nanotechnology from other scientific journals. As the premier journal covering this branch of physics, this title belongs in every collection that supports research in the field. (Tyckoson, David A.)
