03-22-2007 This scholarly academic journal covers history, humanities, and social sciences in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). Articles are well written for both specialists and nonspecialists. Recent articles include "Traditions of Knowledge in Old Javanese Literature, c. 1000;b21500," "Faith in School: Educational Policy Responses to Ethno-Religious Conflict in the Southern Philippines, 1935;b21985," and "Picturesque Burma: British Travel Writing 1890;b21914." Each issue contains an extensive book review section, including works in French and various Southeast Asian languages. Recent reviews include "Colonialism and the Hong Kong Mentality," "Lords of Things: The Fashioning of the Siamese Monarchy's Modern Image," and "Sisters and Lovers: Women and Desire in Bali." The web site, http://uk.cambridge.org/journals/sea, provides a free sample issue for viewing as well as tables of contents and abstracts for back issues dating to 2001.
